Julia and James – A Providence Biltmore Wedding

post written on 21 Feb 10 in Photography, Weddings

So I’m way behind on my blogging,  BUT I am so excited to share this great December wedding that wrapped up my 2009 season!  I first met Julia through one of my previous great couples Steph and Bobby (who are the first image on my main webpage).  Julia was a bridesmaid for Steph back in 2008.  Julia and Jimmy decided to have a wintry wedding and have their gorgeous reception at the Providence Biltmore Hotel on a cold Friday evening.  The ceremony took place in a small church and we left immediately after the ceremony to go to the Providence public library to take some formals.  Check out some of my favorites from the day!

The day started at Julia’s parents’ house.  I couldn’t resist grabbing this silhouette of Julia as she got her dress adjusted.

Sometimes the most beautiful portraits come when people don’t know their having their picture taken.  Here Julia was having her dress adjusted again.

How can you not immediately love these two?!  Such a great energy between mother and daughter.

I think this is the literal definition of a glowing bride!

Julia’s parents’ bedroom made the perfect location for a beautiful, window lit portrait.

During the ceremony, Julia and Jimmy kept trading these glances and giving these great smiles!

Do I need to say anything?!

The Providence Library has this beautiful marble staircase which made for a great spot for some quick portraits.

When I walked in the room, all I said was “WOW!”  Thanks to Doug Levy for grabbing this room shot while I got my lights ready.  Dead on Doug!

The Providence set the scene for a spectacularly elegant first dance.  Thanks to Sarah for providing my lighting!

One last kiss before the end of the dance:

As Jimmy and Julia listened to the toasts, I watched from a far and grabbed tons of great moments!

One of my favorite moments from my 2009 season.  His look says so much.

Julia and her father during their dance.

Julia and Jimmy were treated to a little surprise performance from this fantastic Irish step dancing group.

Again – great reactions while the watched the dancing.

Julia and her mom gettin’ down!

Jimmy taking flight!

No formal last dance, but just a great moment as the evening wound to a close.

You have to watch this slideshow!  That’s an order!  Double click on the arrow, or if that doesn’t work, you can link directly to the show by clicking here.

Jimmy and Julia – thanks so much for your hospitality and for making the day so fun!  I am so happy I could be there to share in your wedding day. Special thanks to Doug Levy as well for his help!

post written on 15 Feb 10 in Charity, Mentoring, Personal, Photography

I am extremely humbled and excited to have been nominated this year to be a “Mentor for Hire” for the 2010 Thirst Relief Mentor Auction!  In case you’ve never heard of it – Thirst Relief is a charity organization founded, “to overcome death and disease resulting from the consumption of contaminated water by providing safe, clean drinking water to those in need around the world.”  This year there are 90 of the some of the world’s best photographers that you can bid on and win a one-on-one mentoring session.  That’s right – even if you don’t bid on me – check out the auction because there are some amazingly talented individuals who are offering up their time and expertise.  Click here to see the full list and to learn more.  In the past, I’ve been mentored by a few of these individuals, and without a doubt it was one of the wisest investments I’ve ever made in my business.

Here’s a bit of information from Thirst Relief’s website:  “Did you know that every 15 seconds someone dies of a waterborne illness? That’s 5760 people every day!  100% of the proceeds directly benefit Thirst Relief. Add to that the incredible wisdom and talent that is being shared in the one-on-one mentor sessions and you have better and more successful photographers! It’s truly a win win for everyone involved!”

So here it is…. want to pick my brain?  Want to see my pricing, contracts, correspondences?  Bid on me!!  I will do my best to work with you on any aspect of your business – whether you’re just getting started, or whether you’ve been in the game for longer.

About me and my mentor auction:

Ned Jackson is a Boston based photographer who has been photographing weddings for over six years. Ned has grown his business organically by focusing on strong personal relationships with his clients that generate long-term referral business year after year. As a result his business grew by over 40% last year, despite the challenging economic climate.

Ned’s mentoring session includes a 90-minute meeting where no topic is off limits. Ned will share the pricing, contracts, correspondences and general philosophy that he has developed throughout the years that have helped him establish his brand and cultivate a loyal client base. Pick his brain on anything and everything, from the ups and downs of balancing business and family life, to growing and fostering your artistic vision. Ned will conduct the mentoring session over lunch (on him) at WPPI, or arrange for a meeting in Boston or over the phone.

My mentor session can take place at WPPI 2010 (Las Vegas), in my hometown of Boston, MA OR on the phone.

Jess and Dane – Barn at Gibbet Hill Wedding

post written on 06 Feb 10 in Photography, Weddings

I first met Jess at Emily & Brendan’s wedding back in the fall of 2007.  If I recall correctly I was helping Jess chase a llama (or maybe an alpaca?) down a busy road in Newton.  Yes, you read that right.  Emily’s neighbor was out of town, and one of the llamas who lived in the back yard somehow broke out and and started making a beeline for on coming traffic.  Don’t worry – I got pictures!

Fortunately we caught the thing and managed to make to the wedding on time.  Not too long after, Jess was nice enough to refer me to her friend Monica who got married this summer to Dave (click here for that post).  At their wedding I bumped into Jess and Dane who were newly engaged and looking to plan a December wedding.  Sure enough, they called me only a few days after the wedding.  I was so excited to get the chance to photograph their wedding, not only because Jess and Dane are two of the most fun loving people I’ve met, but also because I’d get to see so many other former couples!

I picked a few of my favorite images from the day – I hope you enjoy!

I couldn’t resist using this great tree with the dress.

Love the beautiful detail in the dress.

You just couldn’t beat the light coming in to her kitchen while she got her makeup done.

A few quick portraits before heading off to the church.

Love the orchids in this elegant bouquet.

My stellar second shooter Eric McCallister grabbed this shot from the balcony.

As usual – I just love this moment.  Always reminds me of my wedding.  It’s so fun to turn around and see everyone looking back at you!

Eric dove into the Rolls to grab this great shot:

Jess was dying to catch just ONE photo outside at Gibbet Hill in the natural light.  The church was a long way away, but we got back with just a few moments to spare.  Wouldn’t you know, it started to snow.  This was taken on the porch outside in about 23 degree weather – snow flying, and just a flicker of light from the cocktail reception under way inside.

The barn has such a great feel inside.  Makes for romantic dancing shots!

How expressive are these two?!

One last one – Jess and her father (before they started to boogie down!):

Of course, you have to check out the slideshow!  Double click on the play arrow to make sure it works for you!  Or click here to see it in a new window.

Jess and Dane – Thank you so much for making me feel like a guest at your wedding.  Also, thanks to Eric for all your help!
